Adams Ave Street Fair *edited 1/26/06

First of all I'd like to congratulate Eastlake's Silver Armada for tying Sweepstakes at BonitaFest on Saturday. Great job guys!

On Sunday a few of us went over to Normal Heights to check out the Adams Ave music festival. All sorts of people showed up from tattooed rockers, laid back surfers, the locals with their many varieties of horselike dogs and irresistible puppies, fans of performers geared out in black, mothers wandering around booths looking for trinkets, and families with little kids excitedly running around and getting lost. There was food everywhere including huge bratwurst dogs, Hawaiian barbecue, grilled burgers, mini donuts, funnel cake, burritos, gyros, traditional kettle corn, gelato, boba and grilled corn on the cob. Six stages were spread out over the fair; The rock stage, roots rock, blues, acoustic, Lestat's West, and the Jazz and Latin Stage all attracted ridiculously tight packed crowds whenever someone took the stage. I'd say that this is a must attend for those of you who are around next year, the blend of great talented music and the aroma of sizzling barbecues and fresh desserts with the hot street vibe is a day well spent in the San Diego sun.

View of the street fest...I don't know that lady...and she doesn't know me.

Kristy and I enjoying the African rhythms at the Jazz and Latin lawn. Oh and cow too.

Lena, Kristy and Camille cooling off with some free Haagen Daz. Really interesting promotion technique here, you walk into this odd looking maze and find a window connected to a trailer I suppose, where a guy hands you some ice cream, then you wander around looking at television screens with pictures of vanilla bean and display cases of ice cream flavors. The clincher comes at the end when as you walk out onto the hot street back to the festival, a man hands you a coupon and says that the sinfully delicious ice cream you were feasting on was LIGHT.

Vanessa and Kristy kicking back on theatre seats in the locally famous Lestat's West listening to the talents of the sweetly honest and comedic Mary Dolan.

From left: Kristy, Lena, Camille, Jin and Vanessa giving a quick pose for the camera. It was a very hot day, even if the former four are all wearing longsleeves. I have no clue.

Lovin this,
LieAnne

Still kickin...

Don't think vacation's going to keep this club down, we're just getting started. I'm really getting excited for Chalk La Strada but thats not going to be until October 8-9th (mark you calendar) so heres whats up this weekend.

For something local, Bonitafest is going down this saturday afternoon from 9-5 on Bonita road so be sure to check that out. Theres a grand parade with plenty of marching bands (come support your Eastlake Silver Armada!!!) and floats. Theres also plenty of dance performances, entertainment and food.

For those of you who love music or just like to have fun, theres the ADAMS AVENUE STREET FAIR which is a huge music festival held annually in Normal Heights. There will be food, arts and craft vendors, a carnival, and over 80 music performances. Come enjoy FREE blues, rock, reggae, jazz etc. on seven stages. The festival is held on Sept. 24 from 10am to 9pm and Sept. 25 from 10am to 6pm. Check out the offical site here for more info
http://gothere.com/AdamsAve/StreetFair/

As you can tell, theres alot to do this weekend and if you play it out right, you could probably check it all out.

As for me, Im planning to attend everyone of these events with some club members so if you'd like to go, send an email or something: again my email address is subtlepersona@yahoo.com, aim: subtlepersona, or you can use the club forum. Hehe isnt obvious Im pushing that? If you need more contact than that, just send me a message and Ill get you my digits.
Thats about it for now, I will be updating later for Chalk La Strada details so remember to check the site.

So let me recap...
Saturday- Bonitafest (GO BAND!!!) and/or Adams Ave Street Fair
Sunday - Adams Avenue Street Fair...Music Festival

Meeting Review

EHS Humanities Society Agenda Sept. 7, 2005

I. Titan Fest and Music in the Park recap…Thanks! Does anyone have any pics from the park? I want to use this site to document all of our activities.

II. Hurricane Katrina Relief Fundraiser
-ELP collection
ICC will be placing collection containers in all classes for money donations, the money will be grouped by ELP classes
- New Orleans Culture…beads?
We had an idea to sell mardi gras beads for a fundraiser but as of now we're having trouble finding beads. Mr. Hughes has approved the fundraiser so if we do find beads we're good to go.

III. Titan Spirit Week
a. Winner gets $50 in club account, participants report to front of counseling center
b. Schedule
Monday – Sports Jersey (10pts)
Tuesday – Crazy Hair Day (10pts)
Wednesday – Twin Day (10pts, 20 triplets)
Thursday – Mismatch Day (10pts)
Friday – Blue Friday (15pts)

IV. Chalk La Strada (Oct 8th (10am-5pm), Oct 9th (11am-6pm))
a. Choose an image to reproduce - the image must be chosen before we get off for break...the image can be on anything we decide only it should be kept simple because we have many beginners and it cannot be explicit.
b. Transportation - We discussed possible carpool or taking the trolley to Little Italy. Carpool would have many liability issues and we dont want to be unsafe especially since its all the way in downtown. Plus the parking in downtown during events could reach up to $8.00. The trolley will take us from the H street depot all the way to Little Italy, I visited the station today and found out that round trip would be $4.50, however theres a day tripper pass which is $5.00 and we would be able to use it for as many trolley rides and bus rides for the entire day. There is no parking fee to leave your car at the trolley station.
c. Clothes - I forgot to mention this during the meeting but it would be a good idea to wear rugged clothes because you'll get chalk all over your jeans, shirt, arms and face. The chalk washes off but I still wouldnt wear anything new.
To see examples of chalk streetpainting check out the Chalk La Strada site: www.chalklastrada.com

V. Upcoming San Diego Events
a. Maxwell Parrish at SDMA – tickets for Saturday (Andrew D.C.) if you are interested send a message or open up a discussion in the forum.
b. Taste of the Third Artwalk (Sept. 22)
- Chula Vista 5pm
c. Adams Ave Street Fair (Sept. 24th (10-9pm) , Sept. 25th (10-6pm))
- Free music festival in Normal Heights
If you guys are interested in attending this fair leave a comment or start up a discussion on the forum. This is a really great opportunity to listen to music and to get in touch with San Diego culture.

VI. Humanities Society T shirts – Black and white design, Art students are working on designs as an assignment but this is open to anyone.

I can't emphasize this enough, this club is open to any ideas so anything you could contribute would be great. Feel free to speak up about what you want to do in the future or to even just share your opinion. This isn't like other clubs on campus where you get told what to do, the arts are always hands on and ready for whats new.
