The Chariot

We're going Greek!!!

We have acquired a chariot for the Homecoming chariot race held before the game and we need to decorate it by Friday, the 4th of November. At the last meeting we discussed using a classical Greek theme complete with warrior runners and a toga bearing rider. If all goes well, Im sure we have a very good chance of winning the visual art award and perhaps even the actual race.

We have planned the following days to work on the chariot and costumes. If you can attend, please send an email reply or just show up at the following times.

Saturday, Oct. 29th (10am-2pm) Meet near the gym entrance
Sunday, Oct. 30th (1pm-4pm) Carlos King's house (email for directions)
Tuesday, Nov. 1st (Afterschool) Meet in the art room (Rm 902)
If the chariot isn't finished after this, we will announce more meetings

Any materials you think might be useful will be absolutely welcomed. We do need an actual helmet for the rider, if you have one it would be great but be advised that it may be converted into a golden greek helmet. Other materials that would be useful include: paint (gold, black), cardboard, styrofoam boards, fabric, any props for the costumes and anything else you feel we could use. Please do not go out and spend your own money to buy these items, we don't mean to use much money because the chariot designs will be teared down after the race. This is a great fun filled opportunity for the club to get a little school wide attention and to show off our artistic skills.

The chariot crew has been chosen. For the two runners, we have Tom D. and Bryan F., they are both Eastlake athletes and club members who are ecstatic for the race. The rider will be Ms. Jin, she's a featherweight and she's courageous enough to ride our creation.
The chariot we are starting off with is the former Key Club chariot, Carlos and I checked out the chariots the other day and found that this particular chariot had a durable base with strong wheels. We should have no problem converting it into our own design and running it smoothly.

Thanks again for your interest in this club. We hope that our theme rings true to what our club is all about. Please feel free to meet bearing more ideas and don't be shy to give your opinion, I'm saying this for the chariot, but please internalize it for everything we do in the Humanities Society.

May the Greek gods be on our side!

Chalk La Strada Information

Chalk La Strada and Little Italy Precious Festa
Street painting, food, street vendors, stages and performances

Saturday Afternoon- Pre sketch of the image...I know most of you are taking SATs so don't worry about going this day because it won't take too long and there won't be much work for everyone to do. The image we have selected is a Maxfield Parrish painting of a harlequin with a musical instrument perched on a wall. A few visual art people are going to grid the sketch to prepare it for Sunday. If you would like to come just send a message. Chalk La Strada runs from 10am-5pm this day.

Sunday- We want everyone to show up and contribute to a Humanities Society work of art. If you don't want to work with the chalk, come anyway and enjoy the festivities.
We will be taking the trolley from the H Street Trolley Station to the County Center/Little Italy stop. Round trip is $4.50 per person but the Day Tripper Pass (unlimited trolley and bus transit) is $5.00 so I suggest that we go ahead and buy these just in case. The reason we will be taking the trolley is that we do not want to have kids carpooling with each other and drive downtown, if you would like to drive there yourself you can find the directions at the end of this entry but please have a parent take you. Drivers be warned, if you don't find a place to park on the street, the parking lots charge from $5-$10. I think the trolley would give the members a chance to meet and talk. We don't have a set meeting time yet, we will be calling every individual for details on Saturday, but as an estimation probably around 9am. Chalk La Strada runs from 11am-6pm on Sunday.
For those who plan on helping out with the street chalk, wear plain clothes that you wouldn't mind getting a little rugged. You will get chalk on your pants, your shirt, shoes, arms, hands, face...everypart of your body. Sure it is washable but I wouldn't risk a favorite outfit for it. Suggestion of items to bring: sunscreen, water bottle, a hat, cleaning wipes, pocket money and a camera.
If you contribute, you will recieve community service hours because the plots set for the paintings are actually sponsored by local organizations with all money being donated to community associations and a Little Italy school.

Directions to the festa...
From Mexico on Interstate 5, heading North:Exit Hawthorn/Airport exit, make left on Pacific Hwy and a right on Ash Street and park at the County Admin. bldg. Parking $5.00.
